The EU sets out its International Digital Strategy
The European Commission and the High Representative have presented a joint strategy outlining the EU’s external digital action, aiming to reinforce the Union’s leadership in global digital governance. The new EU International Digital Strategy focuses on deepening global partnerships, supporting partner countries’ digital transitions through tools like AI Factories and secure infrastructure, and promoting a rules-based digital order aligned with EU values. Key priorities include trusted connectivity, emerging technologies, digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, and protecting fundamental rights in online spaces.

2025 State of the Digital Decade report urges renewed action on digital transformation, security and technological sovereignty
The European Commission’s 2025 report highlights moderate progress toward the EU’s 2030 digital goals, with improvements in digital public services and business digitalisation. However, major gaps remain in fibre and 5G rollout, AI and cloud adoption, and digital skills—only 55.6% of citizens have basic digital literacy, and advanced ICT talent remains scarce, especially among women. The report calls for stronger investment, simplified regulation, and strategic autonomy to overcome fragmentation and dependence on non-EU tech providers.

Generative AI set to transform EU economy but requires further policy action
A new report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) highlights generative AI’s potential to boost productivity and innovation across sectors like healthcare, education, and culture. While the technology offers major benefits, it also raises risks such as misinformation, bias, and job disruption. The report calls for coordinated EU policies aligned with the AI Act and data laws to ensure GenAI remains safe, ethical, and democratic. The Commission has launched €700 million in funding under the GenAI4EU initiative to promote trusted, European-made GenAI solutions.
