Boosting the use of AI will make strategic industries more competitive
The EU’s new Apply AI Strategy aims to accelerate AI use across industries, especially for SMEs and public services, and support the development of European frontier models.
It focuses on:
- Bridging AI skills gaps, especially in non-ICT fields and generative AI;
- Modernising public services using AI, supported by JRC research and real use cases;
- Transforming EDIHs into AI Experience Centres to offer training, legal guidance, and innovation support.

How the new digital borders system works
As of 12 October 2025, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System digitally registers non-EU travellers entering or leaving the Schengen area for short stays. It replaces passport stamping with electronic records of biometric data and travel history, ensuring faster, more secure border checks. The system will be fully rolled out by 10 April 2026, making EU borders smarter, safer, and more efficient.

New measures unlock access to data from largest online platforms to support research
Starting 29 October 2025, the DSA grants qualified researchers access to data from very large platforms to study societal risks like harmful content or algorithmic impact. Approved by Digital Services Coordinators, this access balances research needs with platform safeguards.
